Excerpt from Der Schimmelreiter Novelle
The scene of the story is laid on the west coast of Schlee wig near Husum, the author's native town. The actors are only Frisian peasants; but, while' actors and action are local and homely, they present types and truths that are universal and eternal. The pervading tone is as invigorating as are the breezes from that North Sea mentioned so frequently in the text.

Born and raised in Germany I speak German fluently and I was really glad for this while reading "Der Schimmelreiter". This is available as a Dual language Novella, but while the English translation covers the essence of the Book, it doesn't even come close to cover the nuances of the language."Der Schimmelreiter" is the story about a man obsessed with water and how to contain it. Nowadays we would classify him with having a touch of OCD or possibly even autism, but the book was published in 1888 when those terms were not yet coined. Theodor Storm, one of the most beloved German authors, uses language like a great Painter uses color to tell the story of Hauke Haien, a farmer's son that marries "up" and becomes the new 'Deichgraf'. Storm uses strong language to describe Hauke's obsession and crafts his words to each character in the story by their importance.
This is a fairly short read, but a beautiful one. If you are fairly fluent in German you will enjoy this, otherwise take another lesson or two before you read this - it will be well worth it.

Der Schimmelreiter
This is a well written novel by a hometown writer about live on the dike along the North Sea Coast
Theodor Storm's bester Roman.
i have read it as a youngster now i want enjoy it again
This novella (pulished in 1888) tells the story of Hauke Haien who grows up in the low countries of northern Germany and works his way to becoming the town's dike reeve. Love, enmity and superstition are woven into a fascinating story about a man fascinated by the dike system that protects the land from a stormy sea.
Easily readable even with a less than perfect commend of the German language.
Genial.
My German is not good enough to fully appreciate the lyrical quality of this short novel, which is a fine literary piece as well as a highly engaging story of a troubled soul. It is a "frame" novel with a couple of layers. The main, inner story takes the protagonist from childhood through maturity and to the end of his life. While it is a ghost story, it is more the tale of a character haunted by aspects of his situation and his own character.
