I really liked the ideas in here. DAP plugins, types of music to play, puzzle toys, how to desensitize him to your leaving cues, they are all great things. But I had two big problems with this book:1. Deciding whether or not to crate your dog. If he's destructive when you leave, but content to chill in his crate, you should crate him. If he's anxious in his crate, but doesn't destroy anything while you're away, then keep him loose in the house. Well, that's all great, but what if he's both destructive when alone AND anxious in his crate?! I've spent hours upon hours, week after week, scouring the internet for ways to make him love his crate but he is just not adapting. He even chewed through and escaped out of one plastic crate. Plus he destroys things around the house while we're away anyway, and he's fully exercised and has enough long-lasting chews and Kongs to busy himself with. We don't have a yard, so we can't try the doggy door approach. I just wished she explained what to do if neither crating nor letting the dog run loose were obvious choices, I would imagine we're not the only ones with a dog like that and it's a pretty big hole to leave in a training book like this.
2. She kept saying not to leave your dog long enough to push his threshold. This can takes weeks or months worth of training. Of COURSE that's ideal, but many people work out of the house from 8am-5pm, do not have friends we can leave the dog with, and cannot afford doggy day cares every single day. I wish she formulated an approach for people to try on evenings and weekends while having to leave him alone during the day. I bought this book based on the reviews here, and cannot implement any of the actual training because I will inevitably have to leave the next morning, setting our progress back to the beginning. So, thanks for the ideas for physical "tools" like treats, toys, plugins, music, and exercises, but I guess I will just have to "wing it" as far as actual training goes.

Don't Leave Me! StepbyStep Help for Your Dog Separation Anxiety Nicole Wilde 9780981722733 Books Reviews
This book delves in to what dogs think when you leave then details steps to try and train. Good informative book!
Where do I even start? I rescued a border collie/German shepherd mix puppy a year ago and he struggled with separation anxiety, to the point I was afraid to leave him alone out of fear he would start hurting himself. I started working with a trainer immediately because dealing with seperation anxiety was a first for me. Fast forward almost one year of trying to follow the trainers suggestions (which included using a crate) I found myself not seeing the results I was looking for. I simply wanted to leave him alone, loose in the house and have him be calm while I was gone and when I returned home. I read the reviews on this book and thought I would give it a shot. Best decision ever... I'm happy to say after only 9 weeks I have gotten him to stay relaxed by himself, loose in the house and he has been doing great. So far I am up to 1 1/2hrs, which may not seem like a lot but coming from how he was in the beginning to now, never in a million years would I think he would do so well so fast. When I do return home he usually doesn't even move off the couch to greet me! I know I can leave him longer but I don't want to push it since what I have been doing has been working so I am just building on the length of time I am away. I will say it takes time and patience, I have been practicing almost everyday but the hard work is finally paying off. I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with their pups with separation anxiety, the book was super easy to read and most importantly made sense. Thank you so much Nicole Wilde!!!
I agree with others that one of the best features of this book is the message of "hope" and the "light at the end of the tunnel." We recently adopted a wonderful 7-year old sweetie from the local shelter. We have had dogs in the past and thought we had experienced every "issue" known to dogdom, ranging from the gross (poop-eating) to the very serious (biting). But nothing has proven as daunting to me as dealing with our new boy's separation anxiety. But, we are taking a multi-pronged approach, using all the tools and tricks listed in the book, and I think we are making progress, albeit slowly. But I am holding out on giving it 5/5 stars for one reason I wanted to see some discussion of how you can tell what your dog's "threshold" is. How can you tell if it's safe to increase the time you are away? Even for short departures, our dog stands stiffly at the window, although when we come back inside, we get a very mellow greeting. So...was he anxious or just being watchful? Or is he expected to lie peacefully in his bed the whole time? Every author on the topic stresses how important it is that you do not leave for more time than your dog can handle, but how do we determine that? I wish Wilde would have addressed this question in her very readable and informative book.
Don't waste your money. All this info is found for free online. She even suggests a few times that you hire a behaviorist. If I could afford that, I wouldn't have wasted a day reading this book. I assume a behaviorist is just going to tell me everything I already read anyway.
I read the book in one night, taking mental notes and trying to decide how to begin. Then at the end, I read this little gem "As I write this, it is exactly seven months from the day we brought Sierra home. I won't say she's completely 'cured,' but...it's a major improvement....Sierra is finally at the point where she can remain relaxed for a FEW HOURS while we are gone..." A few hours? After seven months??
I don't have seven months. I now feel can't help this dog and will probably return her to the rescue, much to my dismay. They want to find her a home with another dog. As the author in this book says, "This could solve her issue completely...then again, it might not."
This book might help you. Then again, it might not.
